If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from sinus infections, you understand the negative impact recurrent sinus problems can have on your quality of life. Snoring, poor sleep, fatigue, and bad breath are among the many frustrating symptoms of unhealthy sinuses. To exacerbate the problem, some individuals do not respond to medication, leaving them perpetually at the mercy of the next sinus infection. Fortunately, balloon sinuplasty can offer relief when medications and other therapies, such as at-home nasal irrigation, have failed.
Sinusitis is a problem that affects millions of Americans each year. While medication is an adequate solution for many sinusitis sufferers, there are others who require further intervention when medications fail to provide relief. Until recently, the only surgical option was invasive sinus surgery that involved the removal of bone and/or inflamed tissue. This surgery involves a lengthy recovery process and offers relatively low success rates. Fortunately, balloon sinuplasty, a recently developed technique, is proving to be an effective treatment and an excellent alternative to traditional sinus surgery.
Dr. Furze, one of the most experienced nose surgeons in Orange County, is one of the few surgeons to offer balloon sinuplasty, the newest and most minimally invasive technique for treating chronic and acute recurrent sinusitis. As the name implies, this procedure uses a balloon catheter to gently enlarge the drainage pathways of the sinuses to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis. In comparison to traditional sinus surgery, Dr. Furze has found that this technique is a less aggressive option, as it does not involve the surgical excision of any bone or tissue. As a result, it has a much lower risk of side effects and complications, yet provides effective relief in instances where medications have failed.

What is balloon sinuplasty?
Balloon sinuplasty is a FDA-approved, minimally-invasive treatment that can open the nasal passage ways and restore normal sinus function. An alternative to sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not require any incisions or the removal of tissue. Dr. Furze’s office is the only office in Southern California that performs balloon sinuplasty using the Medtronic in-office image guidance system, Fusion ENT Navigation. This exclusive imaging system improves procedure accuracy and efficiency during the balloon setup of a balloon sinuplasty. Balloon setup is performed using a multi-sinus dilation system by Entellus Medical or Acclarent.
Ideal candidate for balloon sinuplasty
Dr. Alexis D. Furze, a California double board-certified plastic surgeon, recommends balloon sinuplasty to individuals who suffer from chronic and recurrent sinus infections. The procedure cannot be used to treat obstructions caused by anatomical abnormalities such as nasal polyps or enlarged turbinates. However, it is an excellent non-surgical alternative to sinus surgery.
The procedure and recovery process
A balloon sinuplasty is a straight-forward procedure and does not require a hospital stay. Before the procedure, Dr. Furze will administer a local anesthesia for the patient’s comfort. Combined with the Fusion ENT Navigation system, the XprESS Multi-Sinus Dilation System by Entellus Medical or the Relieva Scout Multi-Sinus Dilation System is used to access the sinuses. A thin catheter with a balloon attached to the end is inserted into the inflamed nasal passage. The balloon is slowly filled with air to gently expand the nasal passages. Next, a saline solution is introduced to unblock the airways and prompt sinus drainage. The balloon catheter is then removed.

Immediately following a balloon sinuplasty procedure, it is common for patients to experience light bleeding. Patients should avoid driving and eating/drinking until the effects of the local anesthesia completely wear off. Patients can expect to be back to their regular routines within about 48 hours.
Because the nasal lining is not damaged during the procedure, complications are extremely rare. Other benefits of balloon sinuplasty include:
- Instant relief of chronic sinusitis without the risks of surgery
- Minimal post-procedure swelling and bruising
- Alleviation of sinusitis symptoms such as pressure, congestion, and obstructed breathing
- Minimal recovery time
