When to Consider a Revision Rhinoplasty
The sheer intricacy of the nose combined with the fact that it is one of the most apparent features of our face makes rhinoplasty a very important procedure in the world of plastic surgery. There is absolutely no room for mistakes when it comes to rhinoplasty. Unfortunately, many times, inexperienced surgeons who perform rhinoplasty can overlook certain aspects of the nose during the surgery which can cause significant difficulties for patients later on. For patients who are unhappy with their initial rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty is a viable option and is widely used to correct poorly performed procedures.
A well-performed and professionally executed rhinoplasty surgery will always have three main components: the actual surgical procedure went as planned, the nose’s appearance is natural after the surgery, and there are no obstructions within the nasal structure. The latter two elements can be largely avoided if the first element – performing the surgery correctly – is accomplished.
Conversely, a poorly performed rhinoplasty can have several problems with it. Here is a short list of signs that every rhinoplasty patient should be aware of:
- Breathing problems (the internal structure of the bones or cartilages need to be repositioned)
- Shape of the nose is misaligned (the nose is crooked, the tip is leaning to one side, or it’s drooping)
- Protrusion on the bridge (the hump on the septum, which is also called pollybeak deformity, remains)
- Nose is too wide (the nose appears too bulky after the surgery)
- Irregular nostrils (the holes of the nostrils are too large or too small)
If any of the above signs are present after your first rhinoplasty surgery and you are not satisfied with the results, then revision rhinoplasty may be an option for you. Having said that, it is also important to note that one must wait until the nose has healed completely from the initial surgery before going for a revision. Usually, this can take anywhere from six months to a year depending on how complex the surgery was.
