What to Look for in a Plastic Surgeon

Finding the right plastic surgeon is no small task. The process requires self-reflection, excellent research skills, a few conversations, and a good intuition.

Before you embark on your search, it is worthwhile to review your motivations for seeking out plastic surgery. Self-confident patients who grasp the benefits and limitations of cosmetic procedures tend to have grounded, realistic expectations–making a positive outcome more likely.  In addition, those who possess some basic knowledge about the procedure (or procedures) they are considering will be able to maximize their time during a surgeon consultation.

Once you have some clarity on your aesthetic goals and expectations, the following steps can help make your search for the best plastic surgeon more efficient.

Training and Board Certification. A plastic surgeon’s professional qualifications should be the first thing you consider. A top surgeon will not only have completed medical school, he or she will be board certified. Board certification is different than state licensure, which involves an examination that all physicians must pass to practice medicine. Certification is a higher voluntary credential for specialists. If a plastic surgeon is board-certified, it means he or she has completed a rigorous qualifying process that has extensive oversight. Some other questions to ask: What professional affiliations does the doctor have? How long has the surgeon been in practice?

Patient Results and Testimonials.  A little online research can go a long way. Most plastic surgeons have ‘before and after’ photos on their websites, which can give you concrete examples of results. Online reviews also provide some insight into the plastic surgeon’s reputation. A quick search can quickly pull up any ratings the doctor has received. And don’t forget the golden word-of-mouth referral. If you know anybody who has had plastic surgery in your area, a discrete conversation may lead you to your perfect surgeon.

The Consultation. Finally, the consultation will provide an excellent opportunity to get a sense of the surgeon’s ability to communicate and answer all your questions. After your consultation, you should feel comfortable that the plastic surgeon not only understands your concerns, but also has the skills to artfully perform the surgery. Ultimately, you have to trust your instinct.

A cosmetic procedure is a large step for patients, make the right choice and do your research.
