At Home Stuffy Nose Treatments

Stuffy Nose

Inability to breathe, headache, malaise: congested sinuses can leave us feeling uncomfortable and fatigued. Constantly blowing your nose is not only annoying, but can leave the skin around the nose raw. So what can you do to help keep your sinuses healthy and clear?

Here are 4 at-home remedies Dr. Furze recommends to his Newport Beach patients to help keep your nasal passages clear during allergy and cold seasons:

● Steam. Holding your head over warm steam can help loosen mucus and reduce inflammation. Place hot water in a basin and place a towel over your head to capture the soothing steam. Be careful that the steam is not too hot; holding your head about 6 inches away can make it more comfortable as well. In cold and dry weather, a humidifier can help keep your environment more humid. Moisture helps to reduce swollen blood vessels ● Saltwater. Nasal irrigation can help relieve congestion due to allergies and colds. Saltwater, or saline, solution wash can clear the nasal passages of dried mucus and particles. A saltwater wash can be done using neti pot, a ceramic container that holds saltwater, or you can purchase a prepared solution in a bottle. Place the nozzle in one nostril at a time, gently pouring the solution in and allowing it to flow out. ● Water. Staying hydrated is excellent for your overall health and that, of course, extends to your sinuses. Liquids in the system helps flush out impurities, bolster the immune system, and thin out mucus. Hot tea, water, juice can all help keep your body in balance. ● Eucalyptus Oil. This aromatic oil has powerful decongestant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease irritation and open breathing. A few drops of eucalyptus oil in your steam inhalation therapy can boost the effects of the steam; or a few drops on your pillow at night can give you some relief as you rest.

At-home care can help restore your nasal passages to normal. If your sinuses do not improve within a 7-10 days and you are experiencing severe discomfort, it may be time to seek out a professional’s advice. Acute and chronic sinusitis may require more advanced treatment. Dr. Furze’s office at Newport Beach is well equipped to deal with these issues.
